100 Days of Hot Yoga
By - Cherie Greenwald
If someone challenged you to roll out your yoga mat to do 100 hot yoga classes in 100 days, what would you do? Would you have the stamina, willpower, and desire to commit to over three months of a daily hot yoga practice? Vince Angulo, a yogi from Southeastern Virginia, didn’t have to be coaxed into the challenge by anyone else. He came up with the idea to do 100 days of hot yoga on his own and began a journey this past March that would change his life.
Vince used to be a 7-day-a-week gym rat, alternating lifting weights and doing cardio work. To supplement his workouts, he began hot yoga classes at Hot House Yoga in Southeastern, VA, and right away he noticed that yoga was easing the aches and pains that resulted from his heavy gym workouts. To Vince, the gym was working out; the yoga studio was working within. When his gym membership was about to run out, it provided the impetus for him to start his 100 days of hot yoga challenge.
Vince likes setting S.M.A.R.T (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound) goals, and he knew that if he kept with his 100-day challenge, he would be able to quantify the results by the measure of his health. Not only did he make it through 100 classes, but toward the end his strength and stamina had increased to the point where he was showing up at Hot House Yoga for 2 classes a day!
You would think that after doing 100 days straight of hot yoga, someone would get a little burnt out (no pun intended). Vince’s experience was the contrary. He told us that he never had an issue making it to class, and now he is fully committed to doing hot yoga every day. In fact, he can’t wait to go to the next class and attributes much of his success to the teachers at Hot House Yoga, who were extremely encouraging once they found out about his goal.
Vince’s story is incredible, as are the benefits that his 100 days of hot yoga brought to him both on and off the mat:
- Better concentration
- No more worries about doing yoga “right” – he can tell in his body that it’s right.
- All-over stronger back and newly opened space in his spine
- Motivation to eat better, make smarter food choices, chew better, and digest and eliminate better
The concept of being in the moment, one of the key teachings of yoga, finally hit home for Vince not just physically, but emotionally and mentally.
These awesome results aren’t based on his personal observation alone. Around five and a half weeks into the quest, Vince visited his doctor and discovered that he had grown a half inch taller, and his doctor cut his blood pressure medication dose in half. If he kept it up, his doctor said, by the end of the summer Vince would no longer need blood pressure medication at all.
One of the most important things that Vince learned throughout the 100 days is how important hydration is. Not a big water drinker, he figured he would need to up his intake to at least 2 to 3 liters of water a day, yet another healthy habit he is looking forward to maintaining.
Vince never did renew that gym membership, and his enthusiasm for hot yoga and its benefits is truly inspiring. Even if you can’t commit to 100 days in a row, Vince’s journey can provide the motivation you need to step onto your yoga mat as often as you can to receive all the benefits of the practice of hot yoga.
Thanks Vince for sharing your hot yoga story!
